The human factor

Type One-off

Course description

The course examines the human factor in high-responsibility operational settings: the set of human capabilities, limitations and behaviours that affect the safety and effectiveness of operations. The main aim is to reduce human error and improve operational safety by understanding the cognitive, emotional and interpersonal mechanisms that drive decisions and actions in complex settings.

Details

The course is delivered entirely through distance learning (FAD) and alternates videos, slides, simulations and game-based learning. This variety of formats is not a matter of style: it keeps attention high on topics that require active reflection, not just passive reading. A certificate of attendance is issued at the end of the course.

Programme

  • Origins and development of the Human Factor concept; the modern ICAO and EASA definition
  • The 'Dirty Dozen': the twelve recurring behavioural errors in operational settings
  • Rasmussen's model: automatic, rule-based and knowledge-based behaviour
  • Perception, attention, memory and cognitive biases
  • The role of stress and emotions in operational decisions
  • Cognitive load and multitasking: limits and management
  • Leadership and followership in operational settings
  • The human-machine system and the interface with automation
  • The operational chain and the five Ms
  • Emergency management and safety culture
  • Warning signs for emotional wellbeing and prevention strategies

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the main human factors that affect operational safety
  • Identify automatic and conscious behaviour and understand when each one poses a risk
  • Apply Rasmussen's model to analyse their own operational behaviour
  • Recognise the 'Dirty Dozen' and adopt strategies to prevent them
  • Manage stress and cognitive load under operational pressure
  • Actively contribute to a safety culture based on awareness of human error
